Algas filamentosas/Hair Algae

Hi Anthony, I'm glad I finaly have the chance to write you. I'm having some trouble controling green hair algea in my system, and I've used almost every recomendation available.

All of my water parameters seem normal (amonia 0, nitrites 0, nitrates >20ppm, PH 8.2). I live in warm weather, so I use a chiller which keeps my water's temp at average of 25°C (77°F). The system is about 120gal total volume including sump and main display tank. I use a Berlin Turbo skimmer that produces about a cup of skimmate daily. I also have a TMC Vecton UV (25W). Water changes weekly 40% with seawater (live near coast). Lights are on 12h periods (HQI 10K-175Wx2+NO-20K-36Wx2). Only got 4 blackbar soldierfish and a blue head wrasse, more than enough live rock, and some invertebrates including anemonies and corals. Feed them twice daily in small amounts (taking care no food is uneaten; feed with spectrum marine pellets and adult brine shrimp). Evaporation is minimal, so I don't add extra freshwater. The seawater is in perfect conditions when arrived (use the same tests as for the aquarium).

Sólo tengo 4 candiles de roca y un guino cabeza azul, mas que suficiente roca viva, y algunos invertebrados incluyendo anemonas y corales blandos. Los alimento dos veces al día en pocas cantidades (asegurandome de que no quede comida sin comer; alimento con artemia adulta y Spectrum Marine en gránulos). La evaporación es mínima, así que hago reposición de agua con agua dulce. El agua de mar que uso es perfecta (la mido con los mismos test del tanque).

Mirando su informe, no hay ningún error significativo, verdaderamente. Su sistema suena muy bueno en conjunto.

El pH es levemente demasiado bajo si esto es un tiempo de día que lee (el mínimo es 8,3 durante en cualquier momento de día... más alto es mejor para reducir las algas y favorecer corales y vive piedra). Esto es verdad de muchas algas del problema. El pH débil los sostiene... y pH alto (sobre 8,3 todo el día y toda la noche) reduce muchos de ellos.

Aún con alimentar cuidadoso, yo pienso todavía que este picotijera es pequeño para este acuario y bioload. ¿Puede agregar usted o puede pedir prestado otro picotijera para ver si la acumulación orgánica disuelta no es el problema aquí? Usted hace probable descubre en mi opinión que un segundo picotijera puede extraer como mucho o más que su marca de Berlín.

Usted quizás considere también utilizar ozono. Tiene una lista muy larga de beneficios inclusive la reducción de orgánico que las algas de comida así como oxígeno creciente y RedOx que inhibe fastidio las algas.

it is good to hear from you :)

looking at your report, there are not any significant errors, indeed. Your system sounds very good overall.

The pH is slightly too low if this is a day time reading (minimum is 8.3 during anytime of day... higher is better for reducing algae and favoring corals and live rock). This is true of many problem algae. Weak pH supports them... and high pH (over 8.3 all day and all night) reduces many of them.

Even with careful feeding, I still think this skimmer is undersized for this aquarium and bioload. Can you add or borrow another skimmer to see if dissolved organic accumulation is not the problem here? You will likely discover in my opinion that a second skimmer can extract as much or more than your Berlin brand.

You might also consider using ozone. It has a very long list of benefits including the reduction of organics that feed algae as well as increasing oxygen and RedOx which inhibit nuisance algae.

Thanks Anthony for your help. I'm rising Ph with kalwasser. Alkalinity is about 6 Meq/L wich seems to be low also. I will try to improve the skimmer, by adding an overflow chamber for the pump inside my sump, while I get another skimmer. Temperature is critical, a few days ago, while servicing the chiller, it went off all night. In the morning the whole glass was brown!! Fortunately the chiller was back on-line for the next day. And the brown gone.

Gracias Antohny por tu ayuda. Le voy a subir el PH con Kalwasser. La alcalinidad es de unos 6 Meq/L lo que parece un poco bajo. Trataré de mejorar el skimmer poniendole un rebosadero a su bomba en el sump, mientras consigo otro skimmer. La temperatura es critica, hace algunos días, mientra le daba servicio a mi chiller, estuvo apagado toda la noche. A la mañana siguiente amaneció el crital marrón!! Afortunadamente el chiller se conecto al día siguiente y el marrón desapareció.
