Dear All

ZSL is currently involved with a campaign to make the Chagos Islands (a UK territory also known as the British Indian Ocean Territory in the middle of the Indian Ocean) into the world’s largest marine protected area (bigger even than the Great Barrier Reef in Australia). It’s one of the most pristine coral reefs in the world and the marine reserve would be 544,000 sq km. We have until 12th February (which is the end of the official consultation period) to persuade the UK Government that declaring this as a no-take marine reserve would be a good idea. One of the key issues is that no-one has heard of Chagos so there is a risk this might not go through due to a lack of response to the consultation. We therefore really need as many people as possible to declare their support.

So how can you help?

Quick option - visit www.protectchagos.org and sign up to support our campaign and then e-mail a request to all your friends to do likewise. It’s easy and very quick.
Longer option – email a letter in support of the Option 1 of the consultation i.e. a no-take MPA then you can email it to [email protected] addressed to the UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband. I attach some more information.
It would be an amazing achievement if we could make it happen in 2010, particularly as this is the year of biodiversity!

With many thanks for your help and support – we understand that the UK government will be particularly interested in the international recognition of the Chagos Islands and support for the marine reserve, so please do sign up and show your support!
